Gardening can add an additional resource to your household in both food and traditional medicinal plants. I just went through the seeds packets we have, to determine what I need and what to add. I am going to start germination of some seeds tomorrow. Here is our current packages of seeds. In addition we will be attempting to germinate and start plants from food sources we have purchased for ourselves and animals. I do need to pick up some additional seeds or transplants of summer squashes, cucumbers and more. One aspect of moving toward a more self sufficient house is being able to grow your own food, even in suburban and urban environments. Consider Fruit Trees instead of ornamental landscaping trees. Put in a small garden, or even grow a few things in pots. Start small do not overwhelm yourself. Consider keeping chickens, quail, pigeons, or rabbits. It is possible to buy a lamb, pig, goat or calf that a farmer raises up to slaughter weight. Sometimes multiple families purchase the large livestock together and then after slaughter split it up.
