It has been a while since I posted anything. Life has been crazy busy but I will try get interesting food related blog articles out more often.
I know many folks stocked up on a variety of canned goods as a result of the Pandemic and you maybe wondering what sort of creative cooking you can do. As a result of this today I am simply posting a couple SPAM recipes from the folks at Hormel which uses SPAM, canned Peaches and canned Sweet Potatoes. Both are presented as a little Summer cheer for your Winter blues. Practically thinking about the advertisement recipes and the canning of fruits and vegetables which is usually a way of preserving produce that will become unavailable after it is out of season or to preserve a large crop for use latter. “Out of Season” for fresh fruit and vegetables is almost a foreign concept for many folks today because of the global food industry practices of importing produce from around the globe.
Recipe #1: California Fiesta

Too with a fan of canned cling peaches.
Drizzle on the peach juice seasoned with 1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard.
Bake in a moderately hot oven (400 F) 30 to 35 minutes.
Recipe #2: Fiesta Peach SPAM Bake
Drain No. 2 1/2 can of peaches, reserve the syrup.
Slice a whole SPAM loaf almost but not all the way through into 5 sections. Cut diamonds on the top. Place in shallow baking sheet.
Insert peach slices in between sections and arrange remaining peach slices around the SPAM loaf.

I can’t say these are the healthiest meal, Classic SPAM is definitely not Kosher or Halal, not Organic, Vegetarian or Vegan. Turkey SPAM maybe an option for those trying to avoid Pork, however I doubt it is certified Kosher or Halal. Another perk of the Turkey SPAM is it appears to be healthier as its Saturated Fat, Cholesterol, Calories and Sodium is lower, while its protein is higher. If you love SPAM or have a pantry now loaded up with various canned meats such as SPAM, fruits and vegetables this might be right up your alley. Even though I believe in eating fresh ingredients when ever possible, I also believe everyone should have some sort of canned food supply for emergencies and such supplies should be rotated, used and replaced regularly to avoid waste. Thus trying out recipes that rely on canned products should be done from time to time, so you have an emergency ration cookbook or meal plan ideas.

SPAM was first sold in the United States of America in 1937. When SPAM was introduced it was an inexpensive meat source solution for Americans suffering the effects of the Great Depression. SPAM became a food known worldwide because of World War II as it was easy to ship and did not require refrigeration. SPAM currently comes in a Lite, Low Sodium and a plethora of flavor versions besides the Classic and Turkey one I gave the label information on. There are now several other brands of Pork based lunch loafs available for consumers as well. In addition there was Breef and Loof two Kosher canned lunch meat loafs made with beef, however I do not believe these “Kosher SPAMs” exist anymore. Halal Canned Corned Beef does exist, though I honestly have no idea how a Corned Beef Loaf would taste with these two peach based recipes. I think the Turkey SPAM would probably taste better with peaches than Corned Beef canned lunch loafs. SPAM has a history of ethnic recipes associated with it globally as a result of WWII and there are even Vegan Faux SPAM recipes for folks missing SPAM or trying to create a Vegan version of a recipe that uses SPAM traditionally.
Love it or hate it SPAM recipes are useful for folks trying to use emergency supplies and historically SPAM is associated with WWII recipes. I will probably from time to time post a SPAM recipe or other canned meat type recipes because of their relevance for emergency food supply cooking and ration based cooking.
Happy Cooking Folks!
